According to the Chief Minister, approving the Mekedatu project without following the existing legal framework could weaken the rights of downstream states. He emphasized that all statutory and environmental clearances should strictly adhere to judicial decisions and the Tribunal Award before any construction begins.

"The rights of downstream states must be protected and existing legal provisions should not be diluted through administrative decisions."

Why Tamil Nadu Opposes Mekedatu

Karnataka's proposed balancing reservoir at Mekedatu has been a contentious issue for several years. Tamil Nadu argues that the project could reduce the flow of Cauvery water into the state, affecting irrigation, drinking water supply, and the livelihoods of millions of farmers dependent on the river.

The state believes that any reduction in water flow could have serious consequences for agriculture and water security in the Cauvery delta region.

Appeal to Prime Minister Modi

Vijay urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that no statutory or administrative approvals are granted until all legal requirements have been fulfilled. He also requested the Centre to withdraw its parliamentary reply, stating that it creates uncertainty regarding established legal provisions governing interstate river disputes.

Karnataka's Position

Karnataka has consistently maintained that the Mekedatu project is intended primarily to provide drinking water to Bengaluru while improving water management. However, Tamil Nadu continues to oppose the proposal, arguing that it may adversely affect the state's rightful share of Cauvery water.
